State of the Georgia Girl Report
Research shows that growing up without sufficient resources to meet basic needs contributes to significantly worse outcomes for children, lasting well into adulthood. Le Menestrel & Duncan, 2019, Poverty & Financial Hardship, continued.
found children living below the poverty line are more likely to: ▶ experience asthma, obesity, and learning disabilities; ▶ repeat grades and graduate from high school at lower rates; ▶ earn less at age 30 than their peers.
In Georgia, the gap to close the affordability trap is widening: the ALICE Essentials Index is rising faster in the state than the national average and rests well above the National Consumer Price Index. In short, while the poverty rate is declining among girls in Georgia, the cost to afford basic needs is rising. The cost of covering basic living expenses is rising faster in Georgia than the national average and the Consumer Price Index.
