GIRL SCOUT IMPACT Business & Service: Both, Not Either

For a generation of girls told to pick a lane: earn or give, hustle or contribute, career or calling. Girl Scouts refuses the choice . In the same program year, the same girl runs a business and improves a neighborhood. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-led entrepreneurship program in the world. Every year, a Georgia girl sets a sales goal, greets a stranger at a booth, tracks inventory, budgets her troop’s earnings, and negotiates when things go wrong. The skills she practices there - setting a goal, making a plan, keeping a promise - are the same ones she will use in her 20s at a first job or a first company. In the same troop, in the same year, she is also planning service projects for the animal shelter down the road, the elementary school her sister attends, the neighborhood park that needs a hand. Community service is not the polite cover for entrepreneurship. It is the parallel curriculum in what her business skills are ultimately for. Girl Scouts is what happens when a girl learns to run a business in the same community she volunteers to improve.
